Canary Wharf Contractors Fund

On Tuesday 4th July the Ascension Eagles Cheerleaders were pleased to be presented with a cheque from the Canary Wharf Contractors fund in support of the work it does with young people in Newham.

The money will be used to fund the development of the mentoring programme- the goal being to expand beyond the current academic provision so that a junior leadership team (JLT) can be established, allowing AEC to shape its young people into coaches and future leaders of the charity.

The optimum goal is to create a culture of self-sufficiency at AEC, whereby athletes are trained to coach effectively so that they can go out and work in the community as part of the Talent Central outreach project, thus increasing its interaction with the community. In turn, AEC will create occupational opportunities for its young people while they go through further education, or make working for the charity a full-time role.

This will have a positive impact as it means that the Talent Central schools programme can grow and more young people will be able take up cheerleading- a physically robust sport which will encourage physical exercise and positive social interaction, which helps towards reducing social divisions and the growing concerns about obesity among young people.

Everyone at AEC would like to take this opportunity to thank the Contractors Fund for supporting the work we do, and for allowing us to continue making such as positive impact in our local community.
